About Pink Luna Farm
Laura Levy and Jim Cox are the fifth owners of this home, built in 1885 by the Caukins Brothers. The Caulkins sold to Ceeley Gallacher, who sold to Arie Handel in 1926. Handel lived in this home until his death in 1977. The Howards bought to home, and restored it to it's original beauty, including new handmade trim pieces and restoration of the hearth. They also added additional bathrooms and bedroom spaces, using wood clad windows and salvaged building materials. The Levy/Cox family added new sinks and fixtures with vintage styling to the upstairs bathrooms.
The lumber for the house and barn came from timber found on and near the homestead. The structural timbers are a foot square and rest upon a concrete foundation. The timbers are all rough cut for use in the balloon construction.
The Howards installed central heating, and new plumbing and wiring. Originally the home was heated with coal, and later converted to gas fixtures and lighting, common for the time. Electricity was installed around 1900. The light fixtures currently in the home are all restored and were purchased from a vintage lighting company in La Conner, Washington.
The wood work, which was covered in hard, dark varnish, has been lovingly restored and preserved. The cove moldings, the picture rail, the fireplace surround and the ceiling medallion in the dining room are all original to the home.
The drainage in the front of the home was originally a tidal slough used to transport farm supplies. Previously, the land was settled by tribes who fished the original stream and lived on the banks. Their shells and other artifacts have been found buried on the property.
The poplar trees were planted by John Handel, and are nearly 100 years old. He also planted the poplars that you see along Best Road. That property was originally part of Pink Luna Farm, and has been divided though the years. The barn and shed along the driveway are owned by Washington Bulb Company, and house pumping equipment and other supplies used for their tulip farming businesses.
